ToCheck - titles which I'm unsure about. They aren't really the focus of this collection, therefore aren't classified by-year, but are still included Misc: "Misceallaneous" - all the programs which are not really games but either have some connection to them or are simply hard to classify Edu: "Educational" - all the games classified as such. Doc: "Documents" - at the moment it contains only spreadsheets I've used for TanRu & Moby data, in the future it will include all assorted gaming docs (though some might've been used in the collection already) Comp: "Compilations" - contains all the compilations & magazine disks which have not been checked yet for individual games The collection is divided into several main directories: At the moment it's also possible but would require a bit more work sorting out wayward entries.
Once this collection reaches 1.0 release level (work is finished and all the file names and archives sorted) it should be very easy to rebuild it to have separate archive for every file (using Total Commander & PeaZip, for example), for those who prefer this kind of structure. As it is, it works best on MiSTer FPGA where it's possible to mount files from inside.
Problem with this approach is that in most cases it requires unpacking an archive in order to be able to play (single disk games can be still drag-n-dropped onto emulators).
To compromise for that this collection has been built in a 1G1Zip format, where a single game is represented by single zip with multiple files inside. But, many Apple II games are multi-disk, and also come in different disk formats which are usable via different means. Since I really like the 1G1R (one-game-one-rom) collection model, allowing at-a-glance navigation and clarity in vast directories, I have applied it here. adding a DOC section: this would contain all the manuals, docs, cover art, etc. adding releases in different disk formats (if necessary) and checking for non-working games formatting: this is in regard to file names (preferable format would be "game name" (year)(publisher/author) and also internal zip structure (some still have unnecessary directories in them) Typos, mistaken years, duplicate files, etc. error checking: with a collection of this scope mistakes are unavoidable. The Brutal Deluxe archive also needs a more thorough scan. It'd be great to try and transfer them to. tape (wav) games: many of the early (1977-1982) Apple II games are currently only available as.
I'd like to seek them out and include in the main game directories (perhaps as a sub-directory), plus also sort all the educational programs by year. While the majority of educational programs are more of a lecture & quiz variety, and not very traditional videogame-like, there are also a lot of interesting and playable titles - both for kids and adults. Apple has a huge library of the latter and I prefer to keep them in a separate directory (with some exceptions eg: Factory, Carmen Sandiego, Oregon Trail). educational games check: for this collection I have decided not to mix "normal" games with educational programs. This is a mammoth task though, and something I intend to do for the second release of this project. But they do need to be eventually checked against the current collection, seeing as they are very likely to contain games which haven't been categorised & officially included yet. compilation check: so far compilations (ie disks containing more than one game) were mostly only used in cases when a particular game from a database could not be found as a standalone disk release, or when there was just a. These games, with a few exceptions, do not include the "educational" ones, which are contained in a separate (mostly unsorted) directory. The end result is ~2500 individual games contained in by-year directories. I've gathered some of the best known existing collections (mostly stuff from the Asimov ftp and - TOSEC, 4am, etc) and checked them against TanRu and MobyGames databases, sorting the games by-year, and then comparing the result against all the files from the collections. STATS: 4.05GB size - 7222 files - 2510 games - 2500(?) educational programs - 2.5GB compilations & mag disks
